The Viking Vision's Scary TV/Movie Recommendations!

The Five Nights at Freddy’s Movie: Khoi Crow

The “Five Nights at Freddy’s” movie was made by Blumhouse studios, and is based off of a game series of the same name. The original game was made and released in August of 2014 by Scott Cawthon. Since then, ten more games have been released along with three separate book series. The movie itself was rumored to be in production since 2015, but was not actually completed until 2023.

The movie follows the protagonist Mike Schmidt and his little sister Abby. Mike gets a security job at an abandoned pizzeria called Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. Inside the building are four animatronics: Freddy the Bear, Chika the Chicken, Bonnie the Bunny, and Foxy the Pirate Fox. The reason why I chose to include this movie is because Five Nights at Freddy’s has always been a large part of my life. The movie helped make the series more known to the general public, which is an overall wonderful thing. From the wonderful cast, to the beautiful set and costume design, this movie warms my heart. You can tell it was made with love and respect for the original game series.

The Call: Leann Gabrielle Vergara

The Netflix Korean thriller/horror movie, The Call, provides a smart psychological option for those who enjoy a movie that makes you ponder throughout. With actresses Jeon Jong-seo and, and Park Shin Hye, who was also in the K-drama Memories of the Alahambra, as the main characters, Oh Young-sook and Seo-yeon, respectively, The Call is a dark psychological horror film that you’ll definitely need a conspiracy board for. The film came out on Netflix in 2020. It currently holds a 7.1 out of 10 on IMDB and a 100% Rotten Tomato rating.

Seo-yeon lives in her childhood home as her mother stays in the hospital, very ill. She discovers a phone that connects her with Oh Young-sook, a young woman who claims that she is 20 years in the past. Throughout the movie, Seo-yeon begins to fear that her friend is being abused, so she uncovers a news article from 20 years prior that describes how Young-sook’s abusive mother had murdered her. Warning her, Seo-yeon can prevent Young-sook’s death, but this begins Young-sook’s murderous rampage where she kills Seo-yeon’s father in the past which affects Seo-yeon’s present. The effects of the past affecting the present prove that these two timelines are happening simultaneously. Nearing the end of the movie, the big twist will leave you shocked and wanting more. Once you finish this movie, definitely consider rewatching it and you might discover something new!

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: Lila Onori

Sabrina Spellman, better known as Sabrina the Teenage Witch, is a beloved character who has existed since the ’60s and has since earned several TV and comic adaptations. In 2018, Netflix breathed life into this aging witch, revamping her story into a never-before-seen, dark, and edgy series that no one had anticipated.

Perfect for a chilly fall day, the show's brooding vibe accomplished with dark visuals and wardrobe paired with horrifying monsters and demons haunting Sabrina each episode, makes for one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. If scenes that make you jump out of your seat aren’t your thing, that’s okay because this show has more to offer. As it turns out, the classic teenage drama plots go surprisingly well with witches and demons. From romantic love triangles to blood magic, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is truly a show like no other and definitely deserves a watch this spooky season.

While this show is very original and innovative in its ideas, it was not the first TV rendition of Sabrina’s tale. Primarily, Sabrina was known for the 1996 sitcom Sabrina the Teenage Witch, however, despite this adaptation of the well-known character differing greatly from her previous depictions, the show was very well received. Another reason for the show's popularity also comes from the fact that the show is set in the same universe as the infamous CW series, Riverdale. The shows had small mentions of each other throughout their individual runs and even premiered a remarkable two crossover episodes. Unfortunately despite its popularity, this series, beloved by many including myself, was canceled in July 2020. Still, the show continues to receive endless praise from fans, and Netflix has been collecting angry mail regarding its cancellation.
