The Rise of Hispanic Music in the United States

In recent years, Latin music has become very popular across the world. Some of the most popular Hispanic artists are Bad Bunny, Shakira, J Balvin, Sebastian Yatra, Manuel Turizo, and Maluma. There have been more top 50 Hispanic songs than ever before, specifically Bad Bunny’s song, “Tití Me Preguntó” . These songs have reached billions of listeners around the world.

Before Bad Bunny’s success, artists like Shakira helped to bring Latin music into the spotlight. Now, a new generation of artists, including Rauw Alejandro, Karol G, Tini, and Duki, have popularized Latin music even more. These artists have not only created amazing solo albums, but they have also collaborated with fellow Hispanic singers to create a supportive community.

Some of the most popular Hispanic artists aren’t singers or songwriters, but rather DJs. One of the biggest DJ’s in the Latin world is Argentine star Bizzarap. Born in a small town called Ramos Mejia in Argentina, the 25-year-old has made some major hits with popular artists such as Shakira, Rauw Alejandro, and Quevedo. Bizzarap has two studios, one located in Buenos Aires and the other in Miami, which he uses to collaborate with a variety of Latin artists.

Another one of the growing artists is Sebastian Yatra, a Colombian singer and songwriter. Recently, Yatra became the first person to sing a Spanish song at the Oscars after singing “Dos Oruguitas” from the movie “Encanto”. After moving to Miami at the age of 5, he was able to learn English and get more in touch with the American system and culture. Some of his top hits include “Tacones Rojos”, “Pareja Del año” and “Vagabundo”. Moreover, his song ¨Tacones Rojos¨ further exemplifies his growing popularity and success as there was a collaborated remix version created in English with renowned American singer John Legend, ten-time Grammy winner and Oscar-winning songwriter. Sebastian Yatra has amassed a large fanbase in the United States, and is one of the most popular Hispanic artists worldwide.

This rise in popularity of Latin music shows no signs of stopping. According to Billboard, listeners of Latin music grew more than 55% from 2020 to 2022. Spanish speaking artists are not only collaborating with each other to make hits, but they are also collaborating with popular non-Hispanic artists. Maluma’s collaboration with French rapper Gims reached #1 in several European countries, and signaled a shift in the direction of Latin music.

Latin music has become especially popular with teenagers, as many new Latin songs have been used for viral Tik Tok dances, such as Becky G’s “MAMIII”. Thanks to these trends, as well as more media coverage for Latin artists, Hispanic music has become very popular with non-Spanish speaking listeners. Many people love Hispanic music because of the beats and rhythm of the songs. Latin music has exposed Americans to the vibrant and passionate culture of Latin America, helping to create a more diverse and inclusive space for artists.
