STEM Conference (Nishika)

On Saturday, October 12, from 10 AM - 1 PM, Valencia High will host a STEM Conference for high school students. The conference will feature booths from STEM-focused clubs and guest speakers while also hosting a research competition.

Students who are interested in participating in the research competition can sign up using this link. The prompt for this year’s competition is: “Combine different areas of STEM to develop an innovation that can benefit your community/our world”. Participants have the chance to win awards and have their research recognized by industry professionals.

Some of the featured guest speakers include a researcher from CalTech who focuses on quantum computing and the leader of the Aerospace Science Team at College of the Canyons, which participates in NASA missions. This conference is a great opportunity for students to learn more about different STEM careers, explore their interests, and network.

Culture Fest (Kaitlin)

Students hosted the very first Hart District Culture Fest on the Valencia High School campus on September 18th, from 5 PM to 8:30 PM. This event came to life with the ideas of two seniors at Valencia, Maddox Espinosa, and Maya Yiadom, who wanted to make a difference in their community by making people of all cultures feel comfortable and welcome.

Espinosa and Yiadom came up with the idea in their math class, and then began working to make it a reality. In elementary school, they both remembered that their schools had “culture fests” where students would bring food from their culture, so they wanted to recreate it to be district-wide and open for anyone to attend.

At the event, attendees were able to eat food from many different cultures, watch performances of dances and songs, play games with friends and family, and learn about all of the different cultures that were featured.

One of the biggest challenges Maya and Maddox faced with organizing the event was reaching out to all of the high schools involved to bring food and participate in the event. The entire process took about seven months of emails and messages to tons of people in order to get as many people involved as possible.

The goals of the event were to help students gain an understanding of other cultures, to bring people together, to unite those who have different cultural backgrounds, and to enhance the relationship between people with the same cultural backgrounds. They wanted to show how beautiful cultural differences are and how uniting people together creates safe environments for all students to thrive in.

Attendees described the event as fun and spirited. Some fan favorites were the orange rice from Latino Student Union, the puto from the Filipino table, and the apple strudels from the Croatian table. Everyone enjoyed the songs and dances performed by students from Canyon High School, and had a great time overall.

The organizers hope to have the event continue for many years to come and to make it a tradition for the Hart District. They also hope that this event will teach underclassmen how to plan something this big and how to run an event properly.
