Prom Dresses Through the Decades
Prom has been seen as an excellent way for teens to spend money they don’t have on a night that is usually full of disappointment. They often say it’s all downhill after getting the dress. The perfect dress that looks exactly how you want it to be is the best part of the night. Although in their time they were seen in high regard, some fashion trends aren’t what they used to be. We’re looking back on prom dresses through the decades will be an interesting ordeal, and we’ll start in the 80s.
The 1980s were known for shoulder pads, frills, sparkles, and any other accessories that were overly dramatic. They were known to have vivid colors from hot pink to purple and flowing skirts with bountiful layers. They often favored a semi-sweetheart neckline with ruffles flowing in a circle around the shoulders. They could have a form fit at the waist before changing to ruffles with the addition of a bow or rose. People may enjoy talking about fashion from the 1980s, but it might be best left in the past. While contrasting colors and aggressive patterns were favored, they aren’t quite as relevant anymore.
The era of 90s prom dresses was a big jump from the over-the-top dresses of the 80s. While the 90s still took inspiration from the previous decade, most dresses were toned down in comparison. Long, detailed satin dresses with unique flares were very popular. They gave off a look of elegance while still adding personal style. Sequins and beading were also very popular details— as well as rosettes, shoulder pads, and black-white color schemes. While some of the harsh styles of the 80s stuck around, it is safe to say the prom fashion trends in the 90s consisted of sleek and elegant dresses.
The 2010s (similarly to the 80s) were fond of vivid coloring. These dresses often were covered with creative patterns or decorative jewels. The colors, silver and white, were trending at this time for a sleek clean look. They also were unique with their asymmetrical lining and abundance of bling. Sweet-heart necklines were often seen as well. Like the 80s, this time also had various amounts of bows, tiers, and ruffles.
This year, we are predicting a vast amount of dress trends but here are some popular styles that will for sure be making an appearance at prom this year. Some styles we are expecting to see include sequins and sparkles, slit dresses, strapless dresses, corset backs, floral dresses, and, of course, long skirts. Long skirts are prom staples, but this year, we are expecting to see sparkles and floral patterns adorn many dresses. Intricate sparkle or sequin patterns have also gained popularity. Although it may not be for everyone, long simple dresses are always a classic.
From bright neon ribbons and ruffles to simplistic satin dresses, prom has seen an enormous variety of styles throughout the years. Arguably, some decades were much better than others. When choosing your prom attire this year, choose something that doesn’t just fit the trends, but your idea of the perfect dress. If your dress is going to be the highlight of the night, find the perfect dress for you!
