No More Celsius? A Valencia Student’s Worst Nightmare.

Valencia High School students were shocked when they received an email the morning of November 7 from the ASB Director, Mr. Benham, announcing that several items would no longer be available in the Snack Shack. Among these items were several students’ favorites including Celsius, Gold Peaks, Peace Teas, coffee cakes, and various ice cream products.

The removal of these items is due to an increased understanding of state laws and policies written in the California State Schools Education Code. These laws seek to promote healthy eating habits for students and require that food and drink items meet certain dietary restrictions at schools.

The Valencia Snack Shack will be able to sell the items they have already purchased until they run out, but will not be able to order more of the following items in the future:

  • Circus Animal Cookies

  • Vanilla Wafers

  • Popcornopolis

  • Nutella ‘n Go

  • Oreo Brownies

  • Coffee Cakes

  • Hi-Chews

  • Honeybuns

  • Big Dipper Cones

  • Cookie Sandwiches

  • Bomb Pops

  • Bubble Gum Snow Cones

  • Super Pops

  • Twix Ice Cream Bars

  • Blue Bunny Sandwiches

  • Bubble Gum Bar

  • California Dream

  • Cranberry/Raspberry Juice

  • Fairlife & Core Power

  • Body Armor

  • Powerade

  • Vitamin Water

  • Lemonade

  • Peace Tea

  • Gold Peak Tea

  • Dunkin’ Coffee

  • Celsius

There are several criteria that items need to meet to be sold in the Snack Shack. A few specific regulations are that snack items must have no more than 200 mg of sodium per item, all juices must have at least 50% fruit juice and zero grams of added sugar, and all drinks must have no traces of caffeine in them. More information on regulations can be found here.

While a large portion of food and drink items from the Snack Shack will be gone, some still remain, and there are plans to replace food that can no longer be sold with alternative items.

Students can look forward to seeing these new items in the Snack Shack soon (there may be changes to this list as more updates are given about restrictions):

  • Linda’s Cookies

  • Cooper Street Cookies

  • Baked Lays

  • Miss Vickie’s Spicy Dill Pickle Chips

  • Birthday Cake Ice Cream Cones

  • Cookie Crumble Bars

  • Blue Ribbon Vanilla

  • Vitamin Water Zero

  • Powerade Zero

While these changes may be upsetting to some students, ASB has given them the opportunity to suggest new Snack Shack items by filling out this form:

However, it cannot be guaranteed that all suggestions will be implemented, as ASB is limited in what they can purchase.

This is a big change for everyone on campus and it will likely take several weeks for Valencia students and staff to come to terms with the unforeseen situation.
