Through a mix of obscure laws and fear, the Trump Administration’s first 100 days in office have been characterized by controversial executive orders. These have included bans on paper straws and withdrawing from the World Health Organization. In January, Trump signed another executive order to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, claiming this to play a “pivotal role” in showcasing American prosperity and  “honoring American greatness”. After all, what could be more pressing for a president than renaming a body of water?

This executive order also sought to rename America’s tallest mountain peak, and in the same spirit, Trump has recently proposed an amendment to change the name of New Mexico. The administration has framed this move as an effort to “make New Mexico more special, more iconic” and emphasize “the true greatness.”

According to the President, the administration is committed to including the American people in the renaming decision. At a rally in Albuquerque, Trump called on citizens of New Mexico to submit their own proposals for the state’s new name. President Trump has already posted some top suggestions on his social media, including “New America,” “New Freedom,” and “Small Texas.” Reactions on social media have been mixed, as some users support the proposal while others have expressed concern for the priorities of this new administration.
