Nonprofit Organizations Save Environment by Removing 2 Million Pounds of Waste From Waterways

A non-profit organization, TerraCycle Global Foundation, collected over a million pounds of litter from rivers, canals, and waterways. Over the past 20 years, TerraCycle has been able to save sea life and the environment by removing and recycling thousands of tons of trash. Along with removing trash from aquatic environments, they also used it to make useful items to sell. They make cool beaded bracelets made out of plastic waste that was collected out of waterways. The organization also implements wildlife-safe river traps in canals in Thailand to prevent waste from going into the ocean. TerraCycle Global Foundation has set new goals for the year that is classified as the Clinton Global Initiative 'Commitment to Action.’ Part of this project is to administer more successful waste-trapping canals in Southeast Asia and organize a material recovery system for managing waste and educating local communities.

96-Year-Old Plans to Keep on Working and Never Retire.

Bill Parton, age 96, remains committed to his work at the sawmill he established 42 years ago- showing a strong work ethic and dedication to his craft. Despite his advanced age, he continues to work five days a week, emphasizing the importance of keeping one's mind active and staying engaged in life. With a career spanning eight decades- starting as a plumber's apprentice during World War II- he has never missed a week of work and still contributes to the family-run business, now overseen by his grandchildren. Parton attributes his success to his late wife, Joan, and credits her for their enduring reputation and legacy.

Mars Eclipse Looks Like Googly Eyes

The Perseverance rover captured 68 images of the potato-shaped moon Phobos passing in front of the Sun, creating a Martian eclipse. Some of these images resemble googly eyes. These images were taken using the rover's left Mastcam-Z camera, providing valuable data for scientists to study Phobos' orbit. Named after the Greek god of fear, Phobos is gradually approaching Mars and may collide with it in 50 million years or disintegrate into a ring. While previous eclipses have been recorded, this event offers unique insights into Phobos' movements and future trajectory.

Dementia Care Home Turned Into a Preschool

In England, a dementia care village has taken a unique approach by incorporating a day nursery for small children alongside facilities for seniors- showing communal well-being and intergenerational connections. Belong, a nonprofit operator of senior homes specializing in dementia care, collaborated with the UK charity Ready Generations to create this pioneering facility. By integrating children into the daily life of residents, including shared activities like mealtimes, storytelling, and arts and crafts, the village aims to provide stimulation and companionship for seniors while offering enriching experiences for the children. The $24.5 million state-of-the-art village, Belong Chester, features six family-sized care households, independent living apartments, and a range of amenities open to the public. Similar intergenerational projects have been initiated in the United States, such as the Intergenerational Learning Center at Mount St. Vincent nursing home in Seattle, highlighting the global trend towards fostering connections between different age groups for mutual benefit and enrichment.

LA Firefighters Rescue Horse Out of Sinkhole

A 20-year-old mare named Lucky fell into a sinkhole near Lake View Terrace. Thankfully, Lucky did not deal with any damages or injuries to her legs when she fell. The Los Angeles Fire Department brought 50 firefighters to safely help Lucky out of the hole. The main strategy for rescuing Lucky was to avoid hurting her and try to make her feel as calm as possible. Initially, they used a helicopter to pull Lucky out; however, when that plan failed, they had to use another. Their second plan was to attach the heavy strapping to the bottom of an excavator to harness the mare out of the hole. The firefighters used a vacuum to blow the sand off from the hole and then lifted Lucky out. Lucky was safely rescued with no harm or injuries!
